Some overflow at ford on the greenway.

Construction today next to the greenway at the bridge replacement work zone so take the detour.

Debris on greenway has been cleared by mowers; still some debris on trail.

No overflow at the ford on the greenway.

Same two trees are down on the greeway.

When riding west on the south side of the lake as you near the main parking lot, watch for vines hanging down on the lake side of the trail. Don't get caught in them.

Lots of debris on greenway and trail: leaves, broken wood, twigs, etc. Not a problem if you watch out for them.

New ruts on the dirt hills on the trail.

Some overflow at the ford on the greenway.

Tree down across the greenway when heading east just as you enter the trees at the water treatment plant. There is a well-worn path around it.

Tree down across the greenway when heading east just as you approach the Reynolds Park Road Bridge construction site. There is a well-worn path around it.

Lake trail is clear with no problems.

Greenway has a tree arching over the trail near the dog park; looks similar to the new 52 interchange. Lots of small debris, mud, and standing water between the mall and the golf course. If you chose to go under the Reynolds Park Road Bridge, there is a tree down across the trail; you have to do some bush riding to get around it. Surprisingly, there is no overflow at the concrete dip.

It was a slow ride today; average speed was one-mph slower than normal. I didn't feel bad, the legs just did not have any power. Don't let anyone fool you, getting old sucks.

Trail and greenway are in good shape. With no rain to make ruts deeper, trail traffic has worn the sides down so they are not as abrupt.

It's still hot but, with the shade on the trail, the constant breeze from riding, and lots of hydration, riding is still enjoyable.

No jerks on the trail today. However, there are idiot construction workers. The Linville Road parking lot is closed for a few months while they build a new parking lot and restrooms. Construction workers have placed a 2-foot high wood stake in the trail near the water fountains just as you leave the bright sun and enter the dark shade. The stake has an orange ribbon on it but is still difficult to see. Be careful.

Jerks

Yesterday's ride was an ordeal. I have never seen so many many idiots on the trail in one day.

  • Four occasions of dogs off-leash and wandering across the trail.
  • A guy riding with no hands that kept tugging and his shirt and shorts while weaving all over the trail.
  • Two occasions of people walking side-by-side with dogs on leashes blocking the trail and instead of getting out of the way, they just smile and act like stupidity gives them the right to do as they please.
  • Twice, I met the same guy walking with hear phones, reading a book, and wandering all over the trail.
  • There was a group of people standing in the intersection below the dam who were blocking the trail in three directions. Instead of moving, they just stood still and riders had to go off the trail to get around them.
  • A rider stopped in middle of the trail in a curve drinking water.
  • Two occasions of runners running on the wrong side of the trail.

My report of a front loader working on the trail the other day apparently was premature. It appears it only graded the one spot where I saw it. Nothing else was done.

Greenway and trail are okay.

Saw a front loader working on the trail today. What a surprise! And a tree that has been down on the greenway for over a week has been removed. I checked, and yes, a foot race event is coming up in two weeks. As I have said before, the city wants to make sure event competitors have a safe surface to run on. However, for those of us who use the greenway and trail daily, year round, we must fend for ourselves. Rocks, ruts, limbs hanging over the trail, fallen limbs, down trees, mud holes and loose sand are just things we have to deal with daily.

I had extensive dental surgery Friday so I haven't ridden since Thursday. Hopefully, I'll be back in the saddle soon.

With no recent heavy storms, the greenway and trail should not have any serious problems.

The Salem Lake Marina is due to open at the end of the month.

The new Quarry Park is due to open soon. It will be an interesting side ride to add miles to the greenway and trail ride.
